DIY Drip Irrigation Setup

Complete rooftop drip irrigation system with 16mm main pipe, micro tubes, filter and timer

A drip irrigation system on a 500 sq ft rooftop costs less than a single dinner out and pays you back in two months of water savings. Here's the exact bill of materials.

Shopping list (~Rs 1,800)

  • 16 mm main pipe — 30 m
  • 4 mm micro tube — 30 m
  • 20 drippers (2 LPH)
  • 1 battery timer
  • 1 filter + tap adapter

Layout

Run the main pipe along your bed edges. Punch a hole at each plant, push in a micro tube, end with a dripper. Cap the line.

Timing

Most rooftop plants need 1-2 litres per day. With 2 LPH drippers, 30 minutes once a day in summer does it.

Maintenance

Flush the filter weekly. Replace timer batteries every 6 months. Drippers clog if you skip the filter — don't.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does drip save vs hand watering?

60-70% versus a hose, 40% versus a watering can.

Can drip work without electricity?

Yes — a gravity-fed barrel 1 metre above the bed runs drip without any pump.

Will hard water clog drippers?

Use a 120-mesh filter and flush weekly. Pressure-compensating drippers handle hard water better.

How long do drip pipes last?

Quality HDPE lasts 5-7 years; cheap PVC cracks in 2 monsoons.

Can I add fertilizer to the drip system?

Yes — use a venturi injector or pour weak compost tea into the source tank.
