Organic Aphid Management

Aphids reproduce every 8 days. Miss them once and you'll lose a crop. The good news: you don't need a single chemical to win.

Spot them early

Check undersides of new leaves every Saturday. Look for sticky honeydew, curled leaves, or a sudden ant column climbing your plant.

The neem-oil recipe

5 ml cold-pressed neem oil + 2 ml liquid soap + 1 litre water. Spray at dusk (never in sun — it burns leaves). Repeat every 5 days for 3 weeks.

Companion allies

Plant marigold, garlic and coriander between crops. Their smell confuses aphids and attracts ladybugs that eat them.

Biological controls

Release 25 ladybugs per 10 sq ft. They're available on Amazon India for ~Rs 400/pack. One ladybug eats 5,000 aphids in its lifetime.

When all else fails

Blast affected plants with a hose. Aphids can't climb back. Combine with neem the same evening.

Frequently asked questions

Are aphids dangerous to humans?

No. But they transmit viruses between plants and weaken yields by 30-50%.

Will neem oil harm bees?

Only if sprayed directly. Spray at dusk when bees are gone and let it dry overnight.

Why do ants appear with aphids?

Ants farm aphids for their honeydew. Wrap a sticky tape around the stem to break the supply chain.

How long until aphids are gone?

With weekly neem and ladybugs, 2-3 weeks.

Can I use dish soap alone?

Yes — 2 ml per litre kills on contact but doesn't prevent return. Pair with neem.
