Growing Moringa — The Miracle Tree

Mature drumstick moringa tree with hanging pod clusters in a South Indian backyard

Drumstick (Moringa oleifera) is the only tree you can plant once and harvest from for 20 years. Leaves, pods, flowers and seeds — every part is useful.

Propagation

Easier from cuttings than seeds. Take a 1 m branch, dip in honey, stick 30 cm deep in soil. Roots in 3 weeks.

Pruning for leaves

Top the tree at 1.5 metres in year one. It branches sideways and you harvest leaves at arm's reach instead of climbing.

Almost nothing eats moringa. Mealybugs occasionally — wipe with neem-soaked cloth. Tolerates drought, poor soil, salinity.
