pH & EC Meter Calibration Guide

Digital pH meter probe dipped in a soil-water slurry next to EC meter and calibration buffer bottles

A Rs 600 pH and EC meter prevents 80% of the silent killers in your garden. Used right, it tells you whether to feed, flush, or just walk away.

Calibration is non-negotiable

Calibrate pH with 4.0 and 7.0 buffer solution before each session. EC meters calibrate with 1413 microsiemens/cm standard.

Reading targets

Soil pH: 6.0-6.8 (most veggies). Hydroponic EC: 1.2 for seedlings, 1.8 for greens, 2.4 for fruiting. Adjust pH up with potassium hydroxide, down with citric acid.

Storage

Never store probes dry. Keep in pH 4 buffer or 3 M KCl solution. A dry probe is a dead probe in 48 hours.

Common reading mistakes

  • Reading immediately after watering (wait 30 minutes)
  • Probing only one spot (test 3 spots and average)
  • Skipping rinses between samples

Frequently asked questions

Cheap meter vs expensive — does it matter?

For soil, Rs 600 meters are fine. For hydroponics, invest Rs 2,500+ for ATC (automatic temperature compensation).

How often should I calibrate?

Hobby use: weekly. Daily commercial use: before every session.

Can I use pool test strips instead?

Strips have +/- 0.5 pH error — too sloppy for serious gardening.

Why does my pH keep drifting?

Probe is aging. Most last 1-2 years with care.

EC went up overnight — bad?

Means water evaporated and salts concentrated. Top up with plain water before correcting nutrients.
