Whitefly Biocontrol Strategies

Whiteflies on the underside of a tomato leaf with a yellow sticky trap covered in caught adults

Whitefly infestations look harmless — a few specks on your tomato leaves. Two weeks later your greenhouse is a cloud. Here's the biological way to stop them.

Yellow sticky traps

Whiteflies obsess over yellow. Hang one A5-sized sticky card per 10 sq ft, 6 inches above the canopy. You'll catch 80% of adults in week one.

Encarsia formosa

This tiny parasitoid wasp lays eggs inside whitefly larvae. Release 3 per affected plant, weekly for 4 weeks. Available from Pest Control of India.

Neem + soap spray

Same recipe as aphids: 5 ml neem + 2 ml soap per litre. Spray undersides at dusk every 5 days.

Quarantine new plants

Every nursery plant carries eggs. Keep new arrivals isolated for 2 weeks before introducing them to your greenhouse.

Frequently asked questions

Do whiteflies bite humans?

No, but they spread plant viruses that ruin entire crops.

Will yellow traps catch beneficial insects?

Some, but the net benefit is overwhelmingly positive. Remove traps once whiteflies drop below threshold.

How fast do whiteflies reproduce?

An adult lays 200-400 eggs in her 30-day life. Acting early matters.

Can I use Encarsia outdoors?

Outdoors, the wasps disperse too quickly. Use neem + traps + reflective mulch instead.

What plants attract whiteflies most?

Tomato, cucumber, brinjal, hibiscus, and any soft-leaf ornamental.
